No. While we're proud to support businesses across South Yorkshire, including Barnsley, Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster, we also work with clients throughout England and Wales. Thanks to modern cloud accounting software, secure document sharing and virtual meetings, we can provide the same friendly, responsive service wherever your business is based.

Making Tax Digital, often called MTD, is HMRC’s move towards digital tax reporting. Instead of keeping manual records and submitting one tax return at the end of the year, affected sole traders and landlords will need to keep digital records and send quarterly updates to HMRC using compatible software.

From 6 April 2026, MTD for Income Tax applies if your qualifying income is over £50,000. From 6 April 2027, this reduces to £30,000, and from 6 April 2028, it reduces to £20,000. If this applies to you, we can help you get the right software in place, keep your records up to date, and make sure your submissions are handled correctly.

You do not legally need an accountant as a sole trader, but having one can save you time, reduce stress and help you avoid costly mistakes. As a sole trader, you are responsible for keeping accurate records, reporting your income and expenses, and submitting your Self Assessment tax return to HMRC.

An accountant can help you understand what expenses you can claim, prepare your tax return, plan for your tax bill, and stay ready for changes such as Making Tax Digital. This is especially useful if your business is growing, you are VAT registered, or you simply want someone to make sure everything is being done properly.

ou must register for VAT if your taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period. This is not based on your financial year. It is a rolling test, so you need to keep checking your turnover each month. You also need to register if you expect your taxable turnover to go over the threshold in the next 30 days.

Some businesses choose to register voluntarily before reaching the threshold, especially if they work with VAT-registered customers or want to reclaim VAT on business purchases. We can help you decide whether VAT registration is right for your business, complete the registration, and prepare your VAT returns.

You can usually claim business expenses if they are incurred wholly and exclusively for the purposes of your business. Common examples include software subscriptions, office costs, phone bills, travel costs, insurance, professional fees, stock, materials and some home-working costs.

Some costs are more complicated, especially if they have both business and personal use, such as mobile phones, cars or working from home. In those cases, only the business element is usually claimable. We can help you review your expenses properly so you claim what you are entitled to without creating unnecessary risk with HMRC.

A sole trader is simple to set up and run, but you and the business are legally the same person. This means you are personally responsible for the business debts and you report your profits through Self Assessment.

A limited company is a separate legal entity. It can offer more protection and may be more tax-efficient in some situations, but it also comes with more responsibilities, including company accounts, Corporation Tax returns, confirmation statements and director duties. The best option depends on your income, risk, plans for growth, and how you want to take money from the business.

The cost of an accountant depends on what support your business needs. A sole trader with simple records may only need help with bookkeeping and a Self Assessment tax return, while a limited company may need bookkeeping, payroll, VAT returns, management accounts, Corporation Tax and year-end accounts.

At Yes That Counts, pricing is designed to be transparent and tailored to where you are in your business journey. You can choose the level of support that fits your current needs, and your package can grow as your business becomes more complex.
